Why Dolph Ziggler Won NXT Title, Brock Lesnar Retired In 2020

WWE superstar Dolph Ziggler winning the NXT title was only done to give Bron Breakker an even bigger push. Also, Brock Lesnar retired from pro wresting after WrestleMania 36 as his current run was not planned.

Why Dolph Ziggler Won NXT Title

To mix things up, WWE had Dolph Ziggler head down to NXT. Then, he surprised many by winning the NXT World Championship.

Naturally, fans were surprised by the move. Remember, they have been pushing Bron Breakker since they changed the brand in the fall.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer mentined how Ziggler will not be champion for long. WWE wants Breaker to regain the title at NXT Takeover Stand & Deliver.

”Yeah but it’s only temporary because I’ve seen people go ‘oh my god they put the Title on a 41-year-old guy in developmental,” said Meltzer. “It’s just to set up Bron Breakker winning the title on a big show.”

WWE has big plans for Breakker, so it makes sense he gets another title run. As of now, no rematch has been confirmed, but that could change come Tuesday.

NXT Takeover Stand & Deliver is April 2 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

WWE has dramatically cut down their roster over the past two years. While the company seems willing to let anyone depart, there are a few names they want to stay put.

Likely, WWE does not want to lose John Cena or Brock Lesnar. Although, they did not have Lesnar under contract for a bit.

After WrestleMania 36, Lesnar’s contract expired. Over a year would pass until he eventually re-signed.

Well, we are know learning more about Lesnar’s mindset at the time. While on The Michael Kay Show, Lesnar noted he retired from pro wrestling after WrestleMania 36.

“When I was younger I thought ‘ah, I’ll want to retire when I’m 40,’” said Lesnar. “I actually retired when COVID hit and my contract was up in 2020, I think.”

“So full circle Brock Lesnar story; I had my first pro wrestling match in Hamel, Minnesota in a garage in front of no people. And 20 years later, in the WWE Heavyweight Champion of the world, had my last wrestling match in a warehouse in front of no people.”

“So 20 years, full cycle, full revolution. And I’m like ‘alright, cool, I’m out.’”

When asked what brought Lesnar back, the obvious answer was money.

“Cha-Ching,” said Lesnar.

WWE must have offered Lesnar a huge contract to keep him away from AEW or staying retired. Beforehand, Lesnar was already the highest paid superstar.

Now, Lesnar is set to headline night two of WrestleMana 38. He will take on Roman Reigns as both enter as champion.

Fans have seen Lesnar versus Reigns before, including in the main event of WrestleMania. This time, the roles are revered as Lesnar enters as a face with Reigns being the heel alongside Paul Heyman.
