Ellen Degeneres is in the farewell season of her TV show. The bubbly host is known for her relatable sense of humor and fun moments with her guests. The show is unique for its relaxed atmosphere, where Ellen frequently pranks or surprises her guests. But sometimes, interviews don’t go as planned. Ellen can sometimes come off as dismissive or uninterested in an interview. Guest and former Scientology Leah Remini noticed this and decided to do something about Ellen’s aloofness. Remini resorted to a bit of playful violence. But did it go too far?

Watch the full clap and judge the “slap” for yourself :

This “slap” reminds me of another awkward moment on Ellen’s show. Actress Dakota Johnson called out Ellen for lying directly to her face about an invite to a party.

My skin is crawling just writing this. This moment is SO AWKWARD GAHHHHHH.

Ok, now that it’s in my mind, you have to watch it and relive the cringe too. Dakota hitting Ellen with the “I didn’t even know you liked me” is enough to make me want to throw my computer in a river. The air leaves the room like the airlock on a spaceship.

Ellen’s Icy Reputation

The ground-breaking comedian and talk show host experienced a deluge of bad press over the past few years.

Beyond the “culture of fear” and sexual harassment that fermented behind the scenes, Ellen is known for being cold and distant to those around her.

This reputation is in stark contrast to the warm and bubbly personality she portrays on television. A former bodyguard of DeGeneres has this to say about her:

“It started going negatively when she introduced me to Ellen and Ellen pretty much just gave me a side glance out of her eye and didn’t even say ‘hello,’ or ‘thank you for protecting my mother, my wife and me,’”

There are a dozen horror stories about how awful a person she is to work for. One writer claimed that Ellen picks someone to be mean to on her show every day.

There are so many anecdotes about Ellen being cold and mean that it is hard NOT to believe some of them are true.

Was Leah Remini Right To Swipe At Ellen?

While Remini was undoubtedly playful and meant no actual harm to Ellen, it was an awkward exchange.

It didn’t seem like Ellen was paying much attention and her one-word responses seemed to indicate she was tuning out the story.

The reality is that Ellen does not exist in the real world that you and I do.

She is a millionaire and has had an army of people catering to her every need for over 20 years. Part of me doesn’t want to blame Ellen for this. It is a side-effect of enormous success to detach from reality.
