The Jeffersons: WATCH Mother Jefferson’s Reaction To Florence’s Job Interview In Debut Show

In the first episode of "The Jeffersons," George and Louise interview Florence to be their maid in their "deluxe apartment in the sky."

“The Jeffersons” television show, starring Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford, was magic from from the very first episode when George and Louise hired Florence to be their maid.

The show, which ran for 11 seasons, pushed boundaries on television. It brought a successful Black family into our family rooms. George Jefferson made for must-see TV in the 1970s.

At the same time, it showed us a biracial family – the Jeffersons’ neighbors.

The show used copious amounts of humor and laughter to deal with racial issues. This made us want to tune in.

Much like shows from the past, much of it wouldn’t stand up to today’s political correctness police. “The Jeffersons” used buzz words that are officially off limits today.

People from all walks of life could identify in someway with this New York family.

Many people with meager beginnings dreamed of living large in a “deluxe apartment in the sky.” While George and Louise moved uptown, they stayed true to their personas.

“All In The Family” Spin-Off

We were first introduced to the Jefferson family on “All In The Family.”

It was evident that they needed a much larger platform, so they got their own show.

When they moved to their big apartment, George decided they needed a maid. But, Louise wasn’t comfortable with the idea since she was previously a maid herself.

But, it was important to George.

As they waited for the prospective maid to arrive, Mother Jefferson dropped by. Mother Jefferson was known to insult Louise and daughters-in-law across the country could identify with this situation.

The Jeffersons Hire Florence

Finally, Florence, played by Marla Gibbs, appears. But, she’s much more polished than you would expect.

After all, this is a job interview and she had to park her sass at the door if she wanted to land the gig. Florence might have an attitude, but she’s also smart.

You might not remember Florence as charming, but watch her in the video below to see her land the job with the Jeffersons.

The best part is when she sees Mother Jefferson, played by actress Zara Cully, in the kitchen!

It’s hard to imagine anything on television today making us laugh like these old shows.

Americans love a rags-to-riches story and “The Jeffersons” filled that bill.

We didn’t care about the color of George Jefferson’s skin. We liked his confident and hilarious attitude and his devotion to Weezie.

We could relate to his dedication to his mother and his issues with his own in-laws. After all, this is an America.
