Actor John Travolta of Grease fame spoke out this week to recall dancing with the late Princess Diana at a White House dinner in 1985, calling it a “very special, magical moment.”

In an interview with Esquire Mexico, Travolta admitted that he was nervous before dancing with the princess.

“I didn’t expect to be asked to dance with her. I had the great privilege and honor to do so. And I thought: ‘There must be a reason to do this and I better give it my all,” Travolta recalled. “This meant guiding the dance well and seeking to have fun. That was the easy part, but introducing myself to Diana in the proper way, conveying assurance, and asking her to be my dance partner was a complicated mission.”

Travolta, 67, went on to say that dancing with Diana was a truly unforgettable experience.

Dancing With Diana Was ‘Like A Dream’

“We are in the White House. It’s midnight. The whole stage is like a dream. I go up to her, touch her on the shoulder, ask her to dance,” he reminisced “She turns around and when she sees me she displays that captivating smile, somewhat sad, and accepts my invitation. And there we were, dancing together like in a fairytale.”

All these years later, Travolta still can’t believe that he really got to dance with her.

Here’s a bit more insight into the dance:

“Who could imagine that something like this is going to happen to you one day?” he said. “I was smart enough to register it in my memory as a very special, magical moment.”

Diana would tragically go on to pass away in 1997 at the age of 36 in a car crash in Paris, France.

Travolta also talked about grief, as he lost his wife Kelly Preston to breast cancer last summer when she was only 57 years old.

Travolta Discusses Grieving His Wife

“I have learned that mourning someone, mourning, is personal. Mourning is individual and experiencing your own journey is what can lead to healing,” Travolta said of the experience of losing his wife. “This is different from someone else’s journey. The most important thing you can do to help another when they are in mourning is to allow them to live it and not complicate it with yours. That’s my experience.”

“Life is movement and a journey; what you leave behind in people, I guess that’s your legacy,” he added. “How they interpret my life will be different for each one. And that’s fine, because that will be me. The best thing I do is try to get to that part of life that allows me to enjoy it, and that joy is experiencing dance, music … and people.”

It’s clear Travolta loves to dance, from his iconic movies – Grease and Saturday Night Fever – to dancing with his late wife Kelly as well as his daughter Ella in a SuperBowl commercial.
