After Grease was recently shown on television, many woke social media users dubbed the movie offensive:

Newton-John Defends Grease

While being interviewed on A Life of Greatness podcast, Newton-John was asked about the backlash against the movie. She thinks everyone needs to calm down and lighten up.

“I think it’s kind of silly. I mean, this movie was made in the 1970s about the 1950s,” the 72-year-old star said. “It was a stage play, it’s a musical, it’s fun. It’s a fun movie musical not to be taken so seriously.”

Not stopping there, Newton-John said that people take things way “too seriously” these days.

“We need to relax a little bit and just enjoy things for what they are,” she said. “I didn’t see it like that at all, I think it’s a fun movie that entertains people.”

Amen to that!

Newton-John Recalls First Kiss With John Travolta

A few days ago, Newton-John opened up about kissing her costar John Travolta on the set of Grease.

In an awkward twist that many actors will be able to relate to, Newton-John and Travolta’s first romantic scene was actually their first day of filming. They were effectively strangers when they kissed each other for the first time!

“It was at the beach — actually the opening scene of the movie,” Newton-John recalled to US Weekly. “It was a beautiful day.”

“We were playing around in the water, and I don’t really remember exactly, but it was a very lovely day and an exciting moment because it was the start of the film, although everything was kind of out of order, but we did that,” she added. “That was the first time we had kissed.”

Though Newton-John confessed that she “was nervous, of course,” the scene went very well.

“It was a very special day and it was really a nice way to get to know John a little bit because we hadn’t spent all that much time together,” she explained.

“We had some rehearsal time and dance time and stuff, but this was our first acting day,” she added. “It was lovely. It was special. And I can’t remember exactly everything ‘cause it’s over 40 years ago.”

Newton-John Talks Kissing A Stranger Onscreen

As for kissing a stranger in an acting scene, Newton-John believes it comes with the territory if you want to be in movies.

“You just do it. And you’re the character,” she said. “You’re playing a character.”

Millennials can try to cancel Grease as much as they want to, but it will remain a classic in the eyes of millions of fans anyway.

They really don’t make movies like that anymore!
