More than a few people seemed to be surprised when initially, it was reported Bellator wasn’t going to extend Yoel Romero an offer. Well, just a few days later, not only has Bellator tabled a contract to the powerful wrestler, it’s being reported he’s going to sign with the promotion.
Just last week, eyebrows were raised, when it was reported Romero and the UFC have parted ways. Although Romero has lost three straight, his last defeat came against middleweight champ, Israel Adesanya, so there wasn’t talk about him getting cut.
Dana White, however, proceeded to cite Romero’s age (43) and recent setbacks, as to why he was let go. The UFC President also reported that the UFC roster is inflated and that as many as 60 cuts could be coming.
Well, not long after, Bellator President Scott Coker said that the promotion is moving in a different direction, while discussing their interest, or apparent lack thereof in Romero.
More recently, however, ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported that Romero is expected to sign with Bellator imminently. The fighter’s pending move to light heavyweight apparently played a role in Bellator changing their stance.
Other outlets are also reporting that Romero is expected to officially sign with Bellator soon.
Even if Romero’s prime years are behind him, there’s no question that Bellator has plenty to work with right now at 205. The promotion recently signed Anthony Johnson as well, and there are likely lots of fans who would love to see him fight Romero.
Bellator also has Ryan Bader, Corey Anderson, Phil Davis and champion Vadim Nemkov at 205. That’s a solid line-up.
