When Conor McGregor announced earlier this year that he’s retiring…again, plenty of people scoffed at the idea that the star is actually done fighting. Well, while it remains to be seen if McGregor will return to the Octagon, Dana White recently reported the UFC’s working on it.

White believes McGregor will return in 2021

Several months ago, McGregor announced he was hanging-up-the-gloves. At the time, the former featherweight and lightweight champ said the sport didn’t excite him anymore. In addition, he relayed he wasn’t happy about the fact he hadn’t been booked for another fight.

Prior to 2020, McGregor repeatedly said he wanted to have a three fight year. After he took out Donald Cerrone in January, he also relayed he didn’t want to sit on the sidelines until this fall.

Well, in recent weeks, McGregor has teased he could come back to the cage. But, obviously, no fight’s have been announced.

More recently, White spoke with ESPN, and of course, he was asked about McGregor. The UFC President said this (quote via MMA Fighting).

“We’re actually working on some fun stuff for Conor at the beginning of next year,” White said. “He should be back next year.

“I’m not saying he’s coming back to fight guaranteed, but we’re talking right now about some stuff.”

Makes sense

Now, it remains to be seen what happens with McGregor, but the fact the UFC is hoping to bring him back isn’t a surprise.

What is kind of interesting here, is that White referenced something “fun”, and apparently, not that the star will fight the winner of the October 24th, Khabib Nurmagomedov – Justin Gaethje fight (although that could be what they’re hoping).

You have to wonder, however, how the COVID-19 pandemic might impact the UFC’s plans with McGregor. If the pandemic is still going on, will the UFC have McGregor fight with no fans in attendance?

Could the UFC be looking at having McGregor fight Nick Diaz? Who is reportedly looking to come back in 2021?

McGregor seems interested in that match-up?

It also remains to be seen how things will play out with the recent allegation of attempted sexual assault that was levied against McGregor. The Irish fighter and his team have vehemently denied the allegation.
