Jon Jones raised eyebrows last night by claiming he’s going to take the heavyweight title from Stipe Miocic. But, it looks like Francis Ngannou’s title shot’s not going to be punted by the light-heavyweight champ.
“Bones” was busy tweeting during the UFC 252 headliner, which saw Miocic outscore Daniel Cormier for the decision win. After Miocic’s latest title defense, Jones proceeded to say he’s headed to heavyweight and that he’s going to take the heavyweight crown.
“Heavyweight world championships I will be seeing you real soon. Victorious”
“For some reason these heavyweights don’t seem so big to me tonight”
“Avoid Stipe’s right hand, I’m too fast, I’ll be too strong when the time is right and have way too much energy. Soon and very soon I’ll be considered the baddest man on this planet”
Not surprisingly, White was asked about Jones’s tweets during the post-fight presser. The UFC President was clearly intrigued by the comments, but he relayed that Miocic – Ngannou II is on deck (quote via MMA Junkie).
“Francis is definitely next,” White said. “I mean, you can’t jump over Francis. Francis has been out there destroying everybody, and if you look at how long ago it was that he got that title shot (against Miocic), he’s worked his way back.
It belongs to Francis Ngannou. But yeah, Jon Jones going to heavyweight is very interesting.”
Now, considering it wasn’t long ago that Jones was feuding with the UFC publicly regarding his contract, it would be pretty surprising if White said “Bones” was next for Miocic. Further, it is pretty hard to deny Ngannou, who has wrecked four straight opponents in the opening round.
