Jorge Masvidal: “God Willing” He’ll Fight Before 2020 is Up

Jorge Masvidal is not fighting Kamaru Usman as planned, due to a highly publicized contractual spat with the UFC and Dana White. But, despite everything that’s gone down, ‘Gamebred’ hopes the UFC bumps their offer so he won’t go through 2020 without fighting.

Masvidal says “God willing’ he’ll fight this year

Earlier this year, it looked like Masvidal and Usman were on a collision course, and White reported that the UFC hoped to have them fight this summer. But, once talks got underway for the fight, Masvidal claimed the promotion was offering him less that he made for his bout with Nate Diaz.

That prompted Masvidal to accuse the UFC of bullying tactics, and he also raised questions about the share of revenue fighters earn from the promotion, in comparison to other sports. White, meanwhile, argued Masvidal should fight according to the terms of his new deal.

Well, eventually it was reported that the UFC offered Masvidal a last-minute deal to fight Usman, in which he would make the same as he did for the Diaz fight. The bout still didn’t get signed, however, as a result of the various exchanges.

Due to all this, a lot of people have been wondering when we’ll see Masvidal fight again. During a recent Q&A the dangerous fighter did on YouTube, Masvidal said this (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“Yeah I’m gonna fight this year,” Masvidal said. “God willing, I’m gonna fight this year. What’s not gonna happen is I’m not gonna be played or underpaid, that’s for sure.

I have a value, a formula we’ve come up with for what I’m worth, and that comes off 16 years of doing this, of seeing the field in and out.

I’m not some rookie, I’m not some guy challenging for the title for the first time in my life.

“I’ve been in this position before in different organizations and stuff and we know how to calculate what I bring in and I want a fair share of what I bring in. …

It’s about how much I want to receive from the pay-per-view, how much share I want from the PPV, that’s one of the many things I’m fighting about. I don’t feel that that cut is fair and I don’t agree with it.”

But will Masvidal fight this year?

So, that’s the big question right? You can understand why Masvidal is hoping to compete in 2020, as he’s coming off the biggest year of his career and it’s important to keep that momentum going.

But, now that the Usman bout fell through, is there another big fight out there that the UFC can table? Which will generate enough dollars to keep everyone happy?

And will the UFC agree to give Masvidal a bigger share of the pay-per-view? That seems kind of unlikely, but here’s hoping that hypothesis is wrong.
