Report: Jon Jones Pleads Guilty to DWI, Releases Statement Following Arrest

Although Jon Jones has had multiple run-ins with the law to date, it looks like the UFC’s light-heavyweight champ is going to avoid jail time following his latest arrest. Provided, of course, the controversial star follows the agreement.

Jones is pleading guilty to DWI

The renowned fighter made headlines last week after Jones was arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico and charged with driving under the influence, negligent use of a firearm and possession of an open container (authorities released bodycam footage of the arrest).

Now TMZ Sports is reporting that Jones has agreed to a deal with prosecutors, in which he is pleading guilty to DWI.

As a result, Jones is receiving one year of supervised probation, 96 hours of community custody (like house arrest), a minimum 90 days of outpatient therapy – which will be conducted via video conferencing due to the coronavirus pandemic – and 48 hours of community service. Jones must also install an ignition interlock device, connected to a breathalyzer, for any vehicle he uses.

The story notes that a judge has not approved the deal yet, but that’s not expected to be an issue. In addition, the report includes the following statement from authorities.

“His attorney and Mr. Jones have been made aware that if he fails to do this, the State will seek to impose the balance of any jail time without regard for any exceptional circumstances.”

Jones releases statement

On Tuesday, Jones also released the following statement through his representative.

“While we all work to understand and cope with stress and uncertainties surrounding the current state of our world, I want to express how truly disappointed I am that I have become the source of a negative headline again, especially during these trying times.”

“I am disappointed for letting down the people I care about the most, my family, friends and my fans. This morning I entered into a plea deal with the Albuquerque DA’s office. I accept full responsibility for my actions and I know that I have some personal work to do to which involves the unhealthy relationship I have with alcohol.”

“I have dedicated so much time and energy to improve my community, and I will not allow this personal setback to hinder my work within the community when we need it most. I truly appreciate the support I have received from the community of Albuquerque and all my fans around the world. I very much look forward to putting this behind me.”

“Thank you all for your continued love and support and please take care of yourselves.”

In 2012, Jones was arrested for driving under the influence, and in 2015, he was arrested due to a hit-and-run, which broke the arm of a pregnant woman. This past September, Jones pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct, as a result of an alleged incident with a waitress.
