Tyrell Fortune has been delivering on the hype that surrounded his move to MMA. But at Bellator 239, Friday night, the decorated wrestler had his perfect record spoiled by Timothy Johnson.
Due to the fact Fortune is a former NCAA Division II champ, there was a lot of buzz surrounding his move into pro MMA back in 2016. Bellator signed Fortune right out of the gate and the heavyweight proceeded to go 8-0 prior to Friday night.
In fact, on account of his success, Fortune recently said the following (quote via MMA Junkie):
“He (Johnson) is the biggest name I’ve fought to date so I think that is a big motivation for me just to grow my brand, grow my name and let guys know, ‘OK, this is someone you want to watch,’” Fortune said. “I am ready to start taking everybody out. I truly believe that I am the best heavyweight in the world at this time, right now.”
Well, as you can see below, Johnson reminded the fight world that with heavyweights, it only takes on shot.
It’s a tough loss for Fortune, but no one should be closing the book on him being a future contender at this stage. He’s only 29, which is quite young for heavyweights, and he’s still fairly new to the sport.
It was a massive, massive win for Johnson, who was coming off back-to-back KO losses to Cheick Kongo and Vitaly Minakov. The UFC vet now has a record of 13-6.
