UFC 245: Battered Colby Covington Claims Marc Goddard “Robbed” Him of Win

Colby Covington took some heavy shots in the final round of his bout with Kamaru Usman, and was dropped a couple of times. But, the controversial fighter is blaming veteran referee Marc Goddard for the defeat.

Covington says Goddard “robbed” him at UFC 245

Covington went to war with Usman in the headliner of UFC 245, and the fight featured numerous, memorable exchanges. In round five, however, Usman landed several pounding shots and Covington was dropped a couple of times. After the second one, as Usman swarmed in, Goddard stopped the bout. “Chaos” wasn’t out, and was still moving, and he immediately protested the stoppage.

After the devastating defeat, Covington posted the comments below:

Just a kid from Oregon chasing the American Dream. Working hard and earning everything in my life the hard way since day one. I put myself out there in front of the world to kill or be killed. Marc Godard robbed me tonight with piss poor officiating. He let my opponent fake injuries for extra time and stopped the fight early. Just like America, my will and spirit can never be broken. Speed bumps can’t slow me down. You people ain’t seen nothing yet. #ufc245

Will people back Covington on this?

It will be interesting to see how people react to Covington’s comments here. For starters, when it comes to Covington and his “Chaos” act, it’s hard to definitively say if he truly believes this. But, that aside, even the biggest Covington supporters have to concede it’s hard to say the welterweight was “robbed”.

One judge had Usman winning three rounds to one heading into the fifth, and another had scored it three – one for Colby. The other judge, however, had it two – two after four rounds. So, on account of the heavy shots Usman landed in round five, if the fight hadn’t been stopped, he would have won via split decision.

Now, as far as Usman faking an injury, well, there was no extensive break in the action. Further, Covington was visibly worse for wear after the fight. So, that’s going to be the take away for a lot of folks when they look back on this fight.

Credit to Covington for his toughness, however, as it’s being reported he may have battled through a broken jaw he incurred earlier in the fight.
