Pedro Munhoz Says His Phone Proves He’s Been Hunting Petr Yan Fight

Petr Yan continues to bomb his way up the UFC’s bantamweight ranks, but Pedro Munhoz is making it clear he’s not afraid to face the rising star. In fact, according to Munhoz, he’s been pursuing a fight with Yan for quite a while.

Munhoz really wants to fight Yan…

The 26-year-old Yan (14-1) has lived up to the hype, and then some, which surrounded his UFC arrival in 2018. Since then, the dangerous fighter has defeated all six opponents he’s faced in the Octagon, and most recently he put away the hall of famer, Urijah Faber.

Well, since Yan’s win over Faber at UFC 245, Munhoz spoke with MMA Junkie. While doing so, the bantamweight contender said this:

“I heard some interviews with Urijah Faber saying nobody wants to fight Petr Yan, but I have text right here to Sean Shelby (UFC matchmaker) back-and-forth and for the last six seven months I’ve been asking for that fight.”

“The idea that nobody in the division wants to fight him, that’s not true. I have the facts here that I’ve been asking for the fight for the last six months, and not because I think it’s going to be an easy or anything.

“…“I know his capability, I know he’s tough, I have nothing against him, but I want to challenge myself with the best fighters,” Munhoz said. “I think the best fighter in that division is him. I head in some interviews that people were avoiding him, but I have the facts right here on my phone that I have been asking for the fight for the last six, seven months. Just tell me the date, just tell me the time, we can do that in the U.S.”

Will Munhoz get his wish?

So, when you consider Munhoz has fought the likes of Aljamain Sterling, Cody Gabrandt, Bryan Caraway and John Dodson to date, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he’s more than willing to face Yan. Further, on paper, there’s a lot to like with a Munhoz – Yan fight. But will it happen?

As it stands right now, it seems kind of unlikely. Yan has been calling for a fight with bantamweight champ Henry Cejudo, as he’s certainly done his part to secure a title shot. Cejudo, however, has been pushing for a bout with Jose Aldo.

But even if that happens (Dana White has said he’s open to it), Yan and his team would likely be more interested in fighting someone like say, Cory Sandhagen. The latter is ranked above Munhoz (#4 vs. #6) and isn’t coming off a loss. In Munhoz’s last bout, at UFC 238 in June, he lost via decision to Aljamain Sterling.
