Jorge Masvidal Says Kamaru Usman “Beat” Him to Breaking Colby Covington’s Jaw

If you thought for some reason that Jorge Masvidal might feel just a little bit bad for Colby Covington, as a result of his defeat and the broken jaw he recently incurred, think again.

Masvidal comments on Covington’s devastating loss

Covington’s rise up the welterweight ranks came to a dramatic halt at UFC 245, as the controversial fighter was stopped by champion Kamaru Usman in round five. Not only that, Covington was bloodied in the memorable fight, and he also incurred a broken jaw.

Well, if you’ve followed Masvidal and Covington in recent years, you know the two used to be friends. But, in recent months, that friendship has turned into a bitter feud. Masvidal claims things changed after Covington allegedly didn’t pay on of their coaches. The latter, however, argued Masvidal was just jealous of his success.

Following UFC 245, Masvidal appeared on Jim Rome’s show, and “Gamebred” had this to say about his former buddy’s loss (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“At first, my initial thing was just to break his face but then my coach said ‘That’s gonna probably get you in jail and you’re not gonna be able to fight and blah blah blah. Let the universe take care of him,’” Masvidal said. “And his exact words were, ‘We’ll get him in the prize ring and break his jaw.’ Somebody beat me to that but his jaw is broken.”

“I don’t like to be critical of human beings because I am one and I’m nowhere near perfect but I’m just not with that whole, your whole career is based out of getting a rise out of people,” Masvidal said. “Like, if I come on your show and I’m just saying a bunch of controversial stuff for people to be talking about me, it’s not really my cup of tea. But people do it all the time and he’s the number one poster boy for that. He always wants to get a reaction out of people.”

“….This is a guy that’s calling people virgins, calling people nerds and saying they live in their parents basements, marks, snowflakes, making fun of Brazilians. That country, it’s not like it’s a rich country and it’s doing well. They’ve got a lot of poverty over there. They’ve got a lot of people that take it to heart what he’s saying and he doesn’t give a flying f*ck. And he does that all for a like on Facebook, for a paycheck for the three, four, five PPVs that it went up with. That guy’s a clown and he got what he deserved.”

Could we see Masvidal – Covington down the line?

So, clearly there’s still a lot of bad blood here, but, it’s hard to say whether we’ll see Masvidal and Covington throw down in the Octagon. On one hand, you would think sooner or later the UFC will try to make this fight happen. But, that will likely require Covington returning to the win column first, or Masvidal taking a loss.

Right now, Masvidal’s most likely opponents for his next bout include Nick Diaz and Usman. A fight with Conor McGregor could also materialize if the star gets by Donald Cerrone on January 18th.
