ATT Owner Dan Lambert Weighs-in on Colby Covington’s Stoppage Loss to Kamaru Usman

After Colby Covington’s devastating defeat at UFC 245, the controversial fighter claimed referee Marc Goddard, rather than Kamaru Usman’s fists, were why he lost the bout. So, what does Covington’s long time associate, the renowned Dan Lambert think?

Lambert weighs-in on the stoppage

If you saw UFC 245, then you know that the headlining bout between Usman and Covington was action packed and competitive. Going into round five, one judge had Usman up three rounds to one, another had it three to one Covington, and the last judge had it tied. Usman, however, floored Covington twice in round five and then brought about a stoppage with a flurry of punches. Covington, who never went out, vehemently protested Goddard’s call, and later he argued the ref  “robbed” him.

Well, since then, the American Top Team owner Lambert spoke with MMA Fighting, and here’s some of what he had to say about the fight.

“He wasn’t going to win the fifth round after getting dropped,” Lambert stated. “The fight was even going into it so whoever won the fifth round was going to win the fight. So was it the greatest stoppage? Not really. It’s not like he was taking a bunch of damage but he wasn’t going to get the decision after it with the remaining 50 seconds unless something crazy happened.

“Can something crazy happen? I guess it can. The week before one of our other guys [Jairzinho Rozenstruik] got a knockout on [Alistair] Overeem with four seconds left. So anything can happen. Yeah, I think it was a little early but I don’t think it affected the decision. I know he was upset about it. No one wants to get the opportunity taken away from them. He was also upset about the “low blow” in the second round, I think that gave Usman a break, that didn’t really look low on the replay but sh*t like that happens in a fight.”

Hard to argue with Lambert’s thoughts on the stoppage. Yes, Covington could have in theory got up and put away Usman. But, considering the position he was in, as well as his condition (and that condition included a broken jaw), chances are he would have taken some additional punishment.

And how is the polarizing fighter doing? Considering how devastating a defeat this was for him? Lambert reported the following about “Chaos”.

“He is a 10 out of 10 as far as what I would hope his mindset would be after a fight like that,” Lambert said. “He wants to get right back in. He wants to get right back into training. He wants to get back into training as soon as he’s ready health wise. He wants to get back and prove that he’s the best.”

It will be interesting to see what comes next for Covington. Due to the injuries he sustained, you would think some other big fights will play out first in the welterweight division, before we have a better sense of who could be next for him.
