ATT Coach Details Why Colby Covington – Jorge Masvidal Bout Will Lead to “Complexities”

If Colby Covington takes the UFC’s welterweight title from Kamaru Usman next month, many believe a bout between “Chaos” and Jorge Masvidal could be next. While American Top Team coach Mike Brown concedes a championship fight between two ATT members is a “good problem to have”, it remains a problem, nonetheless.

Brown details issues for ATT if Covington – Masvidal goes down

Covington is booked to fight the current champ Usman at UFC 245, December 14th. As it stands right now, it’s not clear what’s going to be next for Masvidal, following his win over Nate Diaz last month. But, since Masvidal has been on a serious roll, which includes KO wins over Ben Askren and Darren Till, he is knocking on the title shot door. Plus, because of his growing beef with his former pal, Covington, there would be plenty of buzz if the two fought.

Well, recently Brown spoke with MMA Fighting. While discussing the issues that could arise at ATT, if a fight between team members Covington and Masvidal happens, the renowned coach said this:

“The Covington thing is complex because it’s another guy who comes out of [American Top Team] so it has more complexities,” Brown said. “I don’t necessarily like the idea of guys fighting each other. It doesn’t bother Jorge at all but I would prefer not to see that.

“I don’t necessarily like two American Top Team guys fighting each other. There’s a lot of complexities to it. Yeah, it’s a good problem to have but not necessarily great for the gym.

“Each guy is maybe worried about the other guy’s coaches watching them train. Now you’re in a place where eyes are always watching you that are studying you,” Brown explains. “It’s not a good feeling.

You can understand where Brown’s coming from. Not only would there be increased tension in the gym if the teammates are booked to fight, but the staff would have to worry about being accused of being biased etc.

Brown comments on Masvidal’s next bout

But, as it stands right now, Covington – Masvidal isn’t scheduled, and there’s been lots of talk lately about Masvidal taking a super fight next. After all, “Gamebred” has made it clear he’d be down for another big payday, and he’s repeatedly expressed an interest in fighting Conor McGregor.

While talking about Masvidal’s opportunities, Brown said this:

“Of course the belt is really important and Conor [McGregor] is a really big fight, too,” Brown said. “I’m a little split. I’m kind of with Jorge here. Maybe the best idea is just to take the money fight.”

We shall see what happens. Recently it’s been reported the UFC is trying to book a fight between McGregor and Donald Cerrone. So, if Covington does take the title at UFC 245, don’t be surprised if the UFC takes a long look at having him fight Masvidal.
