Thomas Markle defended his release of a private letter from his daughter, Meghan Markle, which is now the center of royal lawsuit against the Daily Mail.

Days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced a personal lawsuit against British tabloid the Daily Mail for publishing a private letter between the Duchess of Sussex and her father, Thomas Markle broke his silence to explain why he felt forced to go public.

Thomas Markle Reveals Why He Released Private Letter

Thomas explained to Daily Mail that he felt like he had no choice but to release the letter because of comments that were being made about it to the press by sources allegedly close to Meghan.

“I decided to release parts of the letter because of the article from Meghan’s friends in People magazine. I have to defend myself,” he said. “I only released parts of the letter because other parts were so painful. The letter didn’t seem loving to me. I found it hurtful.”

Thomas was referring to a People article in which an unnamed friend of Meghan’s described the letter she sent to her dad as being a loving plea for them to mend their fractured relationship.

“After the wedding she wrote him a letter. She’s like, ‘Dad, I’m so heartbroken. I love you. I have one father. Please stop victimizing me through the media so we can repair our relationship,’” Meghan’s friend reportedly said. “Because every time her team has to come to her and fact-check something [he has said], it’s an arrow to the heart.”

Meghan Markle’s Private Letter

Thomas, however, has denied that the letter was as described by Meghan’s allege friend. Thomas instead describes it as more of “a final farewell.”

“The letter was presented in a way that vilified me and wasn’t true,” Thomas lamented. “It was presented as her reaching out and writing a loving letter in the hope of healing the rift, but the letter isn’t like that at all. I have the right to defend myself.”

“There was no loving message in there, nothing asking about my health, nothing from her saying, ‘Let’s get together and heal our differences,'” Thomas continued. “When I opened the letter I was hoping it was the olive branch I’d longed for. I was expecting something that would be a pathway to reconciliation. Instead it was deeply hurtful. I was so devastated I couldn’t show it to anyone – and never would have, had it not been for the People magazine piece which meant I had to release portions to defend myself.”

Prince Harry Blasts The Press

This comes after Harry released a statement blasting the press for the way they have treated Meghan in the wake of the royal lawsuit against Daily Mail being announced.

“Up to now, we have been unable to correct the continual misrepresentations — something that these select media outlets have been aware of and have therefore exploited on a daily and sometimes hourly basis,” Harry said, according to Fox News. “I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditized to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”

It’s a shame that the rift in the Markle family has come to this. Many hoped that Meghan and her father would find a way to reconcile, especially after the birth of Archie. But it appears that things are so messy that a reconciliation is unlikely at this point. Let’s hope that Meghan and her family one day find the peace that they deserve.
