The MMA world is buzzing over Conor McGregor’s recent announcement that he’s going to fight again on January 18th, and according to a report, Donald Cerrone is winning the race to secure the massive bout.
At a sponsor’s event today in Moscow, Russia, McGregor announced that he will fight again on January 18th at a UFC event in Las Vegas. McGregor didn’t say who he’s going to fight, as the former featherweight and lightweight champ claimed if he announced the opponent, the UFC would “flip” it. I addition, McGregor said this (quote via ESPN):
“Ask the UFC who the opponent is, because I do not give a f— who the opponent is,” McGregor said.
“The people who believe in me deserve better,” McGregor said. “It is an insult to the people that believe in me that I am not fully committed. So now I am coming back and I’m fully committed. And I am eager to come back and show the best of myself for my fans around the world.”
According to a report from ESPN, sources have informed the outlet that Justin Gaethje and Cerrone are in the mix to get the fight. But, the report states that Cerrone is currently the front-runner. The latter is coming off a first round, stoppage loss to Justin Gaethje in September.
So, we’ll see what happens. While nothing is finalized yet, it looks like we could see McGregor back in the cage soon, provided his recent legal issues don’t prevent it.
