Summerslam 2019 Review By Our Wrestling Experts

There are some things to mention for those who did not watch Summerslam 2019, even though it was far from being the best pay-per-view of the year. Here is our opinion on the various events of the night, and what they could have improved upon.

Drew Gulak Versus Oney Lorcan

When I made my predictions before the weekend, I believed this one would be one of the best matches of the night. But boy, did this match disappoint. I do not know if it was a case of too little time for the match or someone backstage decided to cut it short. All I know is, this match should have been a whole lot better on paper.

The matches of the cruiserweights tend to be really good, so this was quite unusual. It was a really short match with little buildup, a problem across the WWE roster. Nevertheless, it was a disappointment in my book.

Apollo Crews Versus Buddy Murphy

This match was not on the original card, but it was a nice surprise nonetheless. I also liked how Rowan was incorporated in it, something I did not personally expect. From a storyline perspective, this was well done.

I would just like to say one more thing. I would love a match between Buddy Murphy and Roman Reigns. The two have chemistry as wrestlers, so maybe something to put in the WWE suggestion box? So, could he still be the real attacker?

Alexa Bliss And Nikki Cross (c) Versus The IIconics

Finally, the WWE included the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship on Summerslam 2019 and a pay-per-view overall. While The IIconics attempted to do a good job with their titles, they were mostly ignored. This match shows that the WWE is starting to pay attention and I could not be happier about it.

Becky Lynch (c) Versus Natalya

We do not have to explain why this match happened, as Natalya is Canadian. I did have high expectations for this match and fortunately it delivered.

When it comes to putting up a good submission match, nobody does it better than Natalya. She is one of the most beloved wrestlers, but often underestimated when it comes to title shots. Looking at this match, Natalya could have easily obtained the title. Well done to both women, as this was one of my favorite matches of the night.

Goldberg Versus Dolph Ziggler

I have to admit that I was looking forward to a match between best friends Dolph Ziggler and The Miz, but it was not meant to be. That being said, this particular match had a good buildup, despite it making little sense.

Honestly, this match delivered more than I expected. I was more than happy just to see Goldberg, I didn’t really need a good match out of him. That being said, both men delivered.

AJ Styles Versus Ricochet

This should have been the best match of the night and it did not disappoint, even though it was not my match of the night. The chemistry between Ricochet and AJ Styles is something amazing, and even the chemistry between Gallows & Anderson and Ricochet met my expectations. It made the match something special and certainly a contender for match of the year.

My personal highlight of the match was the interaction between Gallows & Anderson and Ricochet. The finish of this match was excellent too. I don’t really have anything bad to say.

Bayley (c) Versus Ember Moon

I believed this match would be one of the ones to watch at Summerslam 2019, but unfortunately I was wrong. It was not a bad match, but it is far from the amazing matches I am used to from Ember Moon at NXT. The feud itself was lacking too, which may have affected the investment of fans going into this match. Maybe this was just the wrong opponent for Ember?

Kevin Owens Versus Shane McMahon

Nobody was really into this match, but I was. I am so happy that I was right. There is something about Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens when they enter a ring together, and it was proven once again at Summerslam 2019.

While the WWE is planning to let this feud die after the match at Summerslam, I would like to see more. The entire match was entertaining and it held my attention throughout. You cannot ask for more these days.

Charlotte Flair Versus Trish Stratus

This match was the one I looked forward to the most and I am happy to tell you I wasn’t wrong about it. While the match did have a slow pace at times, you do have to remember that Trish Stratus is 43 years old at the time. Despite her age, I think she did amazing.

The backstory of the match had a good foundation too and it was noticeable throughout the match. Both women put down a story in the ring and the wrestling was on point too. This was the match of the night for me.

Kofi Kingston (c) Versus Randy Orton

I did not expect too much from this match, but I did not think it would disappoint that much. Both men seemed to be holding back throughout the match. I believe they tried to stretch the match and it was not really a fault of theirs. Nevertheless, a double count-out for a championship match is not something fans want to see at this point.

Bray Wyatt Versus Finn Balor

This match intrigued me and it delivered in terms of Bray Wyatt’s entrance. Unfortunately, Bray Wyatt cannot put on long and interesting matches and this was once again proven at Summerslam 2019. While it started brilliantly, it fizzled out in a bit of a dud.

Brock Lesnar Versus Seth Rollins

I am happy Seth Rollins is champion again, because who needs Brock Lesnar title reigns these days? The match itself did not interest me as much as the outcome of it, because the winner of the match would have a consequence for pay-per-view events to come. With Seth Rollins, the WWE is back on the right track. Let us hope this is the last time we see Lesnar in the title picture. If you want to include the man in WWE programming, do not do it in a championship setting. The ratings have said everything over the past couple of months, so listen to your audience and focus on a champion who deserves to be a champion.
