Host Apologizes for ‘Stupid and Offensive’ Comment About Prince George

“Good Morning America” host Lara Spencer apologized on Monday morning for a “stupid and insensitive” comment she made about Prince George taking ballet last week.

Yahoo News reported that days after Spencer mocked George for taking ballet, she said she was wrong to do so.

“I screwed up. I did. The comment I made about dance was insensitive, it was stupid and I am deeply sorry,” Spencer said, adding that she “spoke with several members of the dance community over the last few days. I have listened. I have learned about the bravery that it takes for a young boy to pursue a career in dance. And last night, I sat down with three influential dancers who lived it firsthand.”

Her apology was followed by a pre-taped interview with renowned ballet dancers Robbie Fairchild, Travis Wall, and Fabrice Calmels. After the interview, Spencer said that she had learned the “lesson is that words hurt,” and while it was not her intention to offend, “it was insensitive.” She then thanked the dancers for letting her apologize “personally” and for educating her on the bullying that young male dancers face.

“Again, I’m really sorry,” Spencer concluded.

“So grateful for a very positive conversation and the opportunity to turn a negative into a teachable moment,” she told her cohosts after the segment ended.

This came days after Spencer found herself in hot water for comments she made while reporting on George’s school curriculum this year.

“The future King of England will be putting down the Play-Doh to take on religious studies, computer programming, poetry and ballet, among other things,” she said, adding with a laugh, “Prince William says Prince George absolutely loves ballet. I have news for you, Prince William: We’ll see how long that lasts. I mean, he might! He might end up … Between the religious studies and the computer programming, I just want to go back to the Play-Doh!”

Many in the dance world spoke out to slam Spencer for what she said, including Gene Kelly’s widow and choreographer Debbie Allen. Spencer, a mother to a teenage son and daughter, tried to apologize on Instagram as the backlash against her grew.

“From ballet to anything one wants to explore in life, I say GO FOR IT,” she said. “I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions.”

It remains to be seen whether or not her latest apology was enough.

While what Spencer said about George certainly was offensive, I hope that the public accepts her apology. She may not have said the nicest thing, but I don’t think her comments were bad enough that she deserves to have her life ruined over this.
