It was pretty evident the UFC was hoping to have Brock Lesnar throw down in the Octagon at least one more time. So much so, they had plans to give him a title shot he didn’t deserve. But, now that Lesnar apparently isn’t returning to the cage after all, Dana White recently outlined why the former champ made the right call.
Prior to UFC 226 last July, there had been widespread speculation that the UFC was working on Lesnar’s return. Then after Daniel Cormier took out Stipe Miocic to become the heavyweight champ, the UFC announced Lesnar would be the first to face “DC”.
Well, not long ago, White announced that Lesnar was in fact, not returning to the UFC. This prompted talk and a report that Lesnar and the UFC couldn’t come to terms on a deal, due to the promotion’s new pay-per-view model with ESPN+.
White has denied that’s the case, and says Lesnar opted to take a better offer with WWE. More recently, while talking to fans during a social media session, the UFC President reportedly said this about Lesar (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“I wasn’t pissed at all,” White said. “Brock had a good run here. It’s been fun.
“Listen to fight in this business you have to be 100 percent invested. You’ve got to be in. It’s not where his head was. He made the right decision.”
There you have it. Chances are these comments aren’t going to completely muzzle speculation that the new PPV model did play a role in Lesnar’s decision. But, all that aside, when you consider Lesnar is now 41, and that 2019 is half done, it’s likely safe to say the decorated wrestler’s MMA career is finished.
