Jon Jones Outlines Why Third Bout With Daniel Cormier Ain’t Happening…

Recently Daniel Cormier said he intends to return to light-heavyweight for the purposes of facing his longtime rival, Jon Jones. But, now “Bones” has outlined why he’s certain a third fight with “DC” won’t happen.

Recently Cormier raised eyebrows throughout the game, by reporting he does indeed, plan to make the cut to 205 again and fight Jones. For some time, the consensus had been that the heavyweight champ’s run at 205 was over, particularly since Cormier’s in the final stages of his career.

Well, more recently Jones spoke with Dan Hardy for BT Sports, and he had this to say about Cormier’s future (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“He’s definitely never coming back to light heavyweight,” Jones said. “He says it, but there’s no way he’s coming back to light heavyweight. To commit your life to lose that type of weight and to come up short again would be so devastating. It would take an incredible amount of courage to attempt it, and to come up short would just be so devastating. I doubt he’d put himself through that for a third time.”

There you have it. Of course, Cormier and many of his supporters will probably have a very different take on this. If you’re wondering about the possibility of a third fight going down at heavyweight, once again, Jones distanced himself from that happening.

“I’m a realist,” Jones said. “Daniel Cormier is a special athlete and anyone can be beat. I think my greatest chance of losing would be to a guy like Daniel Cormier. We’d be giving him a power and strength advantage over me; it just doesn’t make sense.

“Right now, I make light heavyweight very easily, and it would just make no sense to fight a guy who, I think, technically (is) on your level and to give him a size advantage. I’m not doing it. I’m sure my fans don’t like to hear me talk like that, but that’s just me being a realist – and being respectful of Daniel’s abilities.”

We shall see what happens in the coming months. First things first, however, as Jones will take on Thiago Santos at UFC 239, July 6th, and Cormeir will rematch Stipe Miocic at UFC 241, August 17th.
