Joe Rogan Isn’t Down With The UFC Cutting Elias Theodorou

Recently eyebrows were raised around MMA when it was reported that Elias Theodorou had been let go by the UFC, and it seems clear Joe Rogan doesn’t agree with the decision.

The Canadian middleweight has been let go following his decision loss to Derek Brunson at UFC FN 151 earlier this month. Since Theodorou had won three in a row prior to the outing, and had gone 8-3 in the Octagon, not too many people were expecting the 30-year-old to get cut.

Well, recently Rogan weighed-in on the situation while talking to the UFC’s Michelle Waterson on his podcast. Here’s what the veteran commentator had to say (quote via MMA Mania):

“Obviously I’m a giant fan of the UFC, I love them to death. I am so happy and I would nothing for any other organization. I would never want to work for any other organization”

But I don’t like the way they do things. There are a lot of things I don’t like. They just cut Elias Theodorou. One loss (to) Derek Brunson, cut.”

“Like explain that. How do you explain that? That one doesn’t make any sense.”

Yup, from a meritocratic perspective, it’s pretty difficult to back the UFC’s move. The consensus seems to be that Theodorou was released, rightfully or wrongly, due to his fighting style and lack of finishes. Six of his eight wins were via decision. Thus, the “MMA is a business and it’s about entertainment” argument’s been made.

It will be interesting to see where Theodorou winds up. Due to his record and run in the UFC, chances are he’s going to receive offers from other big stage organizations.
