UFC Brooklyn’s Belal Muhammad Has a Question For “So-Called Champ” Colby Covington

Colby Covington was quick to blast the UFC and Dana White following confirmation he’s been passed over for a title shot, but fellow welterweight Belal Muhammad has a question for the former interim champ.

Covington has been driving hard for a fight with champion Tyron Woodley for months, but recently it was announced that Kamaru Usman is going to challenge the Woodley at the March 2nd, UFC 235 card. The consensus is that Covington’s been passed over, since he didn’t commit to a fight with Woodley last September due to pending nasal surgery, and because he turned down an offer to fight Usman in January.

Well, recently Muhammad spoke with MMA Junkie, and while doing so, he had this to say about the welterweight division and Covington:

“That division is really good, but (it’s) so crazy that a lot of these guys are afraid to fight each other,” Muhammad said. “They’re on long winning streaks, because no one wants to fight each other. Like, usually guys on winning streaks should be fighting each other, to see who’s better. Like, same thing with Colby Covington, everybody’s all upset that he didn’t get the title shot over Usman.

“But he was saying, ‘I was healthy in March, I was healthy for November, but Woodley was hurt.’ I’m like, If you’re a so-called champ, like you say you are, then why didn’t you fight Usman on that other card, the Anaheim card (UFC 233)? You could have picked that fight and fought him … Don’t talk about it, be about it.”

That’s one way of looking at it, although, it should be noted other fighters have held out for championship fights after being told they’re going to get one. Now it will be interesting to see whether Covington will need to fight someone else, before getting tapped for the winner of Woodley – Usman.

All this aside, Muhammad will look to extend his winning streak to five at UFC Brooklyn, when he faces off with Geof Neal. The 30-year-old has gone 5-2 to date in the Octagon.
