Jorge Masvidal is Still Down to Fight a Diaz, But, There’s a Catch

If you’re still holding out hope for a scrap between Nick Diaz and Jorge Masivdal to materialize, the good news is that the latter is still down. But, don’t expect the fight to happen anytime soon…

Late last year, Dana White buzzed old school and hardcore fans by reporting that Diaz had verbally agreed to fight Masvidal at UFC 235. Not long after, however, Diaz claimed the UFC was trying to “low ball” him, and now it’s been confirmed the two aren’t fighting March 2nd.

Masvidal recently spoke with MMA Junkie Radio, and the outspoken fighter relayed that he’s still very much interested in facing either Nick or Nate Diaz. But, the rugged veteran also said this (quote via MMA Junkie):

“It depends on which stage of my life I’d be in,” Masvidal said, while discussing whether he’s interested in fighting Diaz still since the bout fell through. “Right now, (I wouldn’t want it), because I just want to fight. I want a guaranteed fight. I don’t want something like this to happen. I just want to fight. So, right now, I wouldn’t want to fight anybody that’s had like a high rate of signing and then somehow, some way end up not fighting, whether it’s by injury or whatever it is. I wouldn’t want to fight anybody like that. I want to fight somebody that’s pretty dead-locked when they sign the contract”

Now, when you consider that Masvidal hasn’t fought since November, 2017, when he lost via decision to Stephen Thompson, his comments above are pretty understandable. When asked about who, when and where he’d like to fight, Masvidal reported this:

“I’m hoping to kick somebody’s butt in my city, but I would want like a top-five, top-10 dude,” Masvidal said. “Somebody who can give people back home a good show, not some dry humper. Somebody who’s going to come to (expletive) fight the whole damn time.”

So, hopefully, we see Masvidal in the Octagon soon, against another top welterweight.

The 34-year-old fighter has gone 3-2 in his last five contests, with wins coming over Donald Cerrone, Jake Ellenberger and Ross Pearson during that stretch. Masvidal’s other loss during that time came against Demian Maia (via split decision).

“Gamebred” is currently ranked #9 in the UFC’s 170 division. It should also be noted that in the aforementioned interview, Masvidal said he can still make 155 if needed, and that he’d be willing to do so for a “very big fight”.
