Avril Lavigne Releases First Song in Five Years

Many singers get their start singing gospel in church choirs before turning to mainstream music. Think Elvis, Aretha, and Whitney Houston. However, Avril Lavigne, who’s been absent from the music scene for five years, has done the opposite. Lavigne’s just released a beautiful worship song that shows how she turned to God to help her get through a serious illness.

The popular singer surprised many fans by releasing a song in a different genre. In “Head Above Water,” Lavigne details her battle with Lyme Disease. She thought her life was ending and she called to God for help. The powerful song has tremendous crossover appeal and will likely dominate the pop charts, bringing this inspiring message of faith and love to people who may be hearing it for the first time.

She sings about the unbearable pain she suffered that made her feel as though she was drowning. She begged God to help her keep her head above water and He did. She falls on her knees and asks God to save her as He has saved so many of us.

God keep my head above water / Don’t let me drown / It gets harder / I’ll meet you there at the altar / As I fall down to my knees / Don’t let me drown / Don’t let me drown

The video was released on Thursday and is quickly approaching 3 million views, proving that God’s love is a winning theme even in the music industry. Listen to the powerful song here:

Lavigne was raised as a Christian, but it wasn’t a focal point of her music. Now she has put it out for all to see and celebrate. Perhaps hearing her proclaim her love for Jesus will help others turn to the Lord as well.

Alice Cooper is another singer who has recently discussed his faith and how Jesus saved him. Earlier this year, he was in Jesus Christ, Superstar and he often spoke of his conversion while giving interviews. Cooper was heavily involved with drugs when he was saved by Jesus. He credits his conversion to saving his life.

“My father was a pastor, my grandfather was an evangelist,” Cooper said. “I grew up in the church, went as far away as I could from it — almost died — and then came back to the church.”

There’s always room for Jesus, even for a rock star.
