Towards the end of the South Park episode “With Apologies To Jesse Jackson,” an episode about the kids trying to understand the power and meaning of the ‘n-word,’ Stan talks to Token and finally understands the power of the offensive word because he ‘doesn’t get it.”
I’m reminded of this when thinking about Hulk Hogan’s failed apology to the WWE locker room over his use of the word. Hogan never apologized for using the word, just for being careless about where he used it. Hogan doesn’t get it. Also, he doesn’t get that he doesn’t get it. Understand?
Further troubling words came from Hogan this week about the incident. When asked by wrestling journalist Bill Apter about some of WWE roster (The New Day and other black wrestlers) refusing to accept his apology, instead of being empathetic and understanding about the pain that word caused, Hogan turned defiant. The Hulkster thinks those that aren’t forgiving him aren’t part of the “brotherhood” of wrestling.
Via Fightful:
“There’s just a few wrestlers that don’t understand the bond and the brotherhood of wrestling. If someone makes a mistake, you need to forgive them and move on and try to let them prove themselves.”
Hulk, I think it is you who doesn’t understand. All of this could have been avoided had you just apologized for the word you used and the harm and the history behind it. I think the roster would be supporting if you more if you really understand the gravity of what you said.
Instead, you’d rather bury your head in the sand and blame other people.
You don’t get it.
