WWE Extreme Rules 2018: Needed Changes

WWE was back with another installment of Extreme Rules. After some questionable decisions as of late, the WWE needed to make changes. Not all the changes worked and here’s what the company needs to improve on for next year. If you missed Extreme Rules, be sure to check our results.

Better Overall Show Needed Since Both Brands Were Present

One of the points of combining all the pay per views again was to bulk up the card. Even with everyone present from RAW and SmackDown, minus of course Universal Champion Brock Lesnar, the show could be considered a major disappointment. The biggest moment of the night easily went to Braun Strowman tossing Kevin Owens off the steel cage and onto the announce table below. Besides that spot, the show was a disappointment. It is not like everything bombed, but the matches were either mediocre or below. The other biggest highlight was The B-Team’s post title celebration and that should be a telling point of how much WWE blew it. If this continues, I would rather see pay per views go back to single branded events and run three hours as opposed to five hours of mostly boredom.

Change Parts Of The Pre-Show

Outside of a Big Four WWE pay per view, this was the best pre-show I can remember. There were two takeaways from the event: Andrade “Cien” Almas needs better placement and one of the matches should have been switched with a main card bout. First, we look at Almas vs. Sin Cara. The match was short for something that could have gone 20 minutes and kept fans excited because of the lucha style. At the end of Almas’ run in NXT, he turned into one of the top superstars after a series of setbacks. He would have been a good choice for the United States Championship picture. As for the Tables Match, Sanity and New Day took an overused gimmick and made it work. Of the two pre-show matches, the Tables Match should have opened the card. Maybe, The B-Team (Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel) vs. Matt Hardy & Bray Wyatt was better suited for closing the pre-show. Plus, a title change on the pre-show might cause some extra fans to view the pay per view.

Added Gimmick To Finn Balor Vs. Baron Corbin

At one time, the selling point of Extreme Rules was how every matches involved a stipulation. It certainly watered down the product and WWE has slowly changed that direction in recent years. While Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin was what I expected (nothing special), a gimmick might have helped. Maybe a chairs match or lumberjack match to make things a little more interesting. There seems to be potential here, but it feels like these two would work better together if they had a gimmick to boost interest.

Too Much Outside Inference In RAW Women’s Championship Match

After such a long build, it seems like we never got a proper ending to Nia Jax vs. Alexa Bliss. They have been going at it for several months and it felt that Extreme Rules was the end of the feud. The biggest problem was all the outside interference took focus off Jax-Bliss. People were watching Ronda Rousey at ringside or Natalya basically standing there doing nothing or Mickie James frequently getting involved. Natalya and Mickie should have been tossed early so Nia and Bliss could settle their business. Then at some point, Rousey could get physical with either superstar. It felt like WWE was working on building Rousey; instead, of focusing on the RAW Women’s Championship match.
