Why Are People Wrapping Their Keys In Aluminum Foil?

Technology can be an amazing convenience, but we are finding it is increasingly putting us at risk. Recently, thieves have perfected a way to steal cars without even using a key, but a simple trick can help save you the heartache and financial burden that results from a stolen vehicle.

Car thieves have figured out how to cyber hack your car using your key fob even if it’s not in the car. In the video below, two men steal a car in under a minute by capturing and manipulating the signals from a key fob. There are products that help intensify the signal from the key fob that allow the car to be stolen rather effortlessly. It’s unreal how quickly and easily this is done.

But, there is a simple solution that you have in your kitchen. Wrapping your key fob in aluminum foil when it is not in use will contain the signals, preventing thieves from driving off with your car.

Moshe Shlisel is CEO of GuardKnox Cyber Technologies. This cybersecurity expert puts his key fob in a metal can at home. For added protection, he wraps it in aluminum foil.

Former FBI agent Holly Hubert is also a cybersecurity expert and CEO of GlobalSecurityIQ. She also endorses wrapping your key fob in aluminum foil as a preventative measure.

“Although it’s not ideal, it is the most inexpensive way,” Hubert said. “The cyber threat is so dynamic and ever-changing, it’s hard for consumers to keep up.”

For added protection, Hubert also recommends putting your key fob in a Faraday bag, which prevents outside signals from penetrating your devices. It’s unfortunate we have to worry about things like car thieves in general, but this is the world we live in.
