Garrett Matthias obituary

A 5-year-old boy with terminal cancer never let the disease break his spirit. After his passing, Garrett Matthias’ sense of humor and joy for life was shared with the world in the obituary he wrote for himself.

Garrett had alveolar fusion negative rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive and rare form of cancer. Before his death, his mother Emilie and he went to funerals. The young boy was surprised by how sad the attendees were and he didn’t want his funeral to carry that same tone. Instead, he wanted his to be joyful and fun. Garrett believed funerals should celebrate life rather than commiserate in sadness and focus on death.

Garrett knew he was going to die so he started planning his own funeral and even wrote his obituary. This is not something anyone wants a 5-year-old to do, but Garrett was clear that he wanted to be remembered as a fun and free-spirited child who loved life.

“He would say, ‘Why are funerals so sad? I’m going to have bouncy houses at mine,” Emilie Matthias reported.

The boy told his parents to include his likes and dislikes in the obituary. Garrett wanted to be a professional boxer and he wanted everyone to know that he did not like pants and “dirty stupid cancer.” When he died, he said he was “going to be a gorilla and throw poo at Daddy!”

The obituary concluded “See ya later, suckas! – The Great Garrett Underpants.” Garrett’s funeral will have bouncy houses and fireworks as he requested.

“Garrett endured nine months of hell before he lost his battle with cancer. During that time, he never lost his sense of humor and loved to tease the doctors and nurses. From whoopy cushions and sneaking clothespins on their clothes to ‘hazing’ the interns and new staff doctors, he was forever a prankster. Nothing caught people off guard as much as his response to ‘see ya later alligator’,” the obituary read.

A GoFundMe account was set up for the Matthias family.
