As a WWII veteran, Bush was eligible for a dog with this program. The program was created to increase the mobility and independence of veterans, first responders with disabilities, and active-duty service members. These serviceĀ dogs assist them to become more self-reliant.

Sully will certainly be an asset to the wheelchair-boundĀ president. The Labrador will also provide Bush with much-needed companionship since losing his wife of 73 years.

President Bush tweeted about Sully becoming a part of his family. He’s excited to have this new friend and is grateful to America’s VetDogs. But Sully wasn’t the only dog in the picture, though he certainly is the better behaved one. As you can see, former President Bill Clinton dropped by to meet the dog below.

Sully HW Bush didn’t waste any time getting his own Instagram account. The dog is described as a “kinder, gentler Labrador” as a tribute to President Bush’s election themes. His second picture shows how well the two have already bonded. President Bush has his hand on his new best friend as the pooch sits next to to his wheelchair.

Sully will be a great addition to Bush’s new chapter in life. He will be able to retrieve items for him and help open doors. But most of all, he’ll be able to help keep him company for his remaining years without Barbara.
