teen shields elderly woman

A Houston teen’s simple act of kindness has gone viral after his mother shared a photo of him providing shade to a wheelchair-bound woman with his umbrella.

Louis Jordan was driving downtown to pick up his mother from work when he spotted the woman sitting alone at a bus stop. Feeling concerned given the heat, he stopped his car, took out his umbrella, and walked over to shield her from the blazing sun.

“It was unbearably hot,” Jordan later told local news station KTRK-TV. “I wouldn’t want to be out there in the sun.”

As it turned out, Jordan wound up waiting with the woman, whose name he’d learned was Michelle, for nearly two hours – and he didn’t mind any bit of it:

“Come to find out, it was going to be a little longer for METRO Lift to come and get her, so we ended up waiting out there for an hour and 45 minutes,” Louis said.

During the wait, Louis and Michelle became friends. Anytime he sees her waiting, he grabs his umbrella and goes to enjoy some time with her.

“We laugh, joke. She’s in a book club. Come to find out, she likes pork chops.” Louis said.

This isn’t the first time Jordan has put others before himself. His mother, Bernette Botts, says he rescued his grandmother who was trapped by four feet of water in her home during Hurricane Harvey. “I am one proud mama,” Botts said.

As for Jordan, he continues to visit Michelle whenever he sees her – and he hopes he can do the same for others. “I pray that God allows me to be used every day. I’ve been down and out so much,” he said.

What an inspiring act and message in an increasingly bleak and selfish world. Jordan’s act of caring and kindness is proof that there are still good people out there and shows that even the smallest things can make a huge difference.
