winter car hack

Winter weather can make it hard to get around. Even if the roads have been cleared of snow and ice, you’ll likely be dealing with ice on your car if you park outside.

There are some simple solutions that can help you prepare for this. Just a minute or two of prepping your car for bad weather in the evening can save you quite a bit of time in the morning before you head off for the day.

If a storm is predicted, here are five tips to help you prepare your ride:

  1. Put socks on your windshield wipers. The socks can protect your wipers from the ice. They can also help prevent ice from building up around them. It can be frustrating to find your wiper frozen to the windshield. A sock can help keep that problem away!
  2. Rub half an onion or potato on your windshield. The sugars in these vegetables keep the ice from sticking to the car windows.
  3. Put Ziploc bags over your side view mirrors to prevent ice from building up on them. This is especially helpful if you do not have heated mirrors that speed up the defrosting process.
  4. Spray a mixture of water and vinegar on the car windows to melt the ice. In addition, using a solution of 75% vinegar and 25% water on your windshields the night before can also help prevent ice from forming!
  5. Use a pump or two of hand sanitizer on frozen door handles. The rubbing alcohol in the sanitizer will quickly thaw the ice.

You can learn more about these tips in the video below.

These tips can save you a lot of time on a frigid morning. You also can use a solution of rubbing alcohol and water to defrost your windshield in seconds. You don’t even need to spray it before the temperature drops. You can also keep this solution in your car as rubbing alcohol’s freezing point is 128 degrees below freezing.
