TNA/Impact is under new managment…again. After years of upheaval and changing ownership, the erstwhile WWE competitor is looking to regain some footing after slipping to third place behind Ring of Honor. Impact is now booked by Scott D’Amore and Don Callis. D’Amore has been around TNA for over a decade, and Callis is a former ECW announcer who now does English commentary for New Japan. With that new management came a few changes as Impact continues to work towards breaking out of the cycle of failure they’ve been stuck in for what seems like years.
Part of that is finding new avenues for people to see their wrestling. That’s why Impact announced the creation of a channel on Twitch, the service owned by Amazon that is primarily known for live streaming video games. To kick off the channel, Impact decided to bring back their most brutal match: Barbed Wire Massacre. According to Impact, POP TV deemed the match “Too violent for TV” so it will now be shown exclusively on Twitch following the January 18th episode of Impact.
The Barbed Wire Massacre match, invented by hardcore and TNA legend Abyss, takes place in a ring with no ropes surrounded by barbed wire. There are also ladders, chairs and various other objects wrapped in barbed wire surrounding the ring. It has only been done three times before. This time it is OVE (Jake and Dave Crist and Sami Callihan) vs. LAX (Santana, Ortiz, and Homicide)
It will be interesting to see how much violence the match will have. Wrestling has noticeably turned less violent, especially on TV. But from the spoilers I’ve read (this match happened in November) there will be plenty of blood and destruction for those who are interested in such things.
This works. I am going to watch Impact (on Twitch) because of it. Like most of America, I don’t have Pop TV on my cable package and hadn’t heard of it until Impact signed up with them. With WWE experimenting with Facebook with their Mixed Match Challenge, it is clear that streaming services are the future of broadcasting for wrestling and beyond.
