They Got Married in 1940 – 75 Years Later To The Day, They Died In Each Other’s Arms

Jeanette and Alexander Toczko had the kind of love story that most people only dream of. It reminded their children of something right out of a romantic movie.

“They were boyfriend and girlfriend when they were 8 years old,” their son Richard remembered. They were both the children of Polish immigrants. They had been together so long that Alexander carried a picture of Jeanette in her First Communion dress in his wallet.

Alexander, a World War II veteran, married Jeanette in 1940, and the couple moved to San Diego in the early ’70s. They lived happily there for years until Alexander broke his hip. As his health rapidly declined, Jeanette became ill as well, and their family prepared to say goodbye.

The couple’s final wish was to die in their own bed holding hands. Hospice brought a second bed into their home so that they could lie beside each other in their final moments.

“She kept asking us, ‘What is today, what is today?’ We said it was June. She said ‘it’s June 29th,’ and June 29th is their 75th wedding anniversary,” said their daughter Aimee. The couple had always dreamed of making it to 75 years together.

Final Resting Time

The family brought in balloons and flowers and had a brief celebration of their marriage before giving the couple some alone time. Doctors were shocked to discover that it was then that Alexander died in his wife’s arms.

“See, this is what you wanted,” Jeanette whispered as she hugged him. “You died in my arms and I love you. I love you, wait for me, I’ll be there soon.” The couple often spoke about dying while holding each other. They were that close. They were always together.

Less than 24 hours later, Jeanette passed away, too. Their children spoke with local news about their parent’s lifelong love and their remarkable story. You can learn more about the Toczkos in the video below.
