A newlywed couple is counting their blessings after the wife was bitten by a shark on their honeymoon. Sarah Illig says she is lucky to have her arm after a nurse shark dug into it while her husband was filming.

The couple went swimming with predators as part of an attraction at their Caribbean hotel. She swam with the sharks earlier in the trip but didn’t have much luck the next time around.

“I felt a whoosh of water, something clamped down on my arm and I assumed my husband was playing a prank on me,” she said. “Less than a second later I realized how much it hurt and looked past where my goggles were blocking my side vision to see the shark (bigger than myself) latched on to my arm.”

Fortunately, the bride was able to instantly pull back from the shark, but the damage had already been done. Her husband, Evan Carroll, had his GoPro filming under the water, otherwise, nobody would have believed this tale had actually happened.

When Sarah originally posted the video below she wrote, “Ended the honeymoon with a bang (bite),” she wrote, adding “Check out the surprise and very rare nurse shark bite in the video and don’t forget the volume to hear the crunchhhhh.”

Sarah said if she was at home in South Carolina, she would have gotten stitches, but she took a pass on them in the Caribbean. She reports the wound healing nicely.

Nurse shark bites might be rare, but they do indeed happen. One latched onto a fisherman’s stomach and refused to let go, even when the man jumped back into the boat. Click here to watch that video. It is proof that Sarah is lucky she got away without a serious injury!
