Some movies withstand the test of time. They can be watched over and over again with enthusiasm. Matilda is one of those movies. The 1996 children’s fantasy was directed by Danny DeVito. His wife Rhea Pearlman starred alongside him as the parents of a brilliant young girl named Matilda Wormwood.
Matilda uses telekinesis to deal with her parents who don’t value education and her bully of a principal, Agatha Trunchbull. Her parents finally relent and allow the young genius to attend Trunchbull’s school where she befriends several children.
Matilda’s teacher, Ms. Honey, recognizes Matilda’s ability and encourages her both inside and outside of the classroom, much to the dismay of Matida’s parents. The movie is full of fun scenes that stimulate a child’s imagination, particularly when she’s dealing with the trainwreck of adults in her life. One of the most memorable scenes is below.
The FBI gathers enough evidence to prosecute Matilda’s father, Harry, and the family quickly tries to flee the country. Before they leave, Matilda abruptly talks her parents into allowing Ms. Honey to adopt her.
This film is one that will stir up a lot of fun memories for the families who watched it over 20 years ago. It was a fan favorite so when the cast had a reunion, many people were anxious to see how the child actors grew up. A clip of that reunion is below.
