Willie Nelson was the 2015 recipient of the Gershwin Prize. The country legend spent the evening of the ceremony being serenaded with many of his songs. The most moving performance of the night came when Alison Krauss joined Jamey Johnson in a soulful duet.
It was an emotional evening as he got to hear some of the best singers honor him while taking on many of his masterpieces.
One performance in particular brought Willie to tears.
Country music artists Alison Krauss and Jamey Johnson sang “Seven Spanish Angels” and it really struck a chord. Their duet likely reminded Willie of Ray Charles, who performed the 1982 song with him.
The duet was originally released on Willie Nelson’s 27th studio album, the much celebrated Always On My Mind. The lyrics really are beautiful.
He looked down into her brown eyes
And said “say a prayer for me”
She threw her arms around him
Whispered, “God will keep us free”
They could hear the riders comin’
He said, “this is my last fight
If they take me back to Texas
They won’t take me back alive”
“Seven Spanish Angels” reads like a prayer.
The duet honoring Willie Nelson on his special night was perfectly done.
Alison Krauss’ voice is haunting. Her performances are always filled with such emotion – like my personal favorite: “Down To The River To Pray”.
When you watch the video below, you will understand why Willie Nelson got so emotional.
Just beautiful!
This was an award and an evening that Willie Nelson certainly deserved. Alison Krauss is an amazing performer. Her voice captivates.
