Turkish archaeologists believe they have located the grave of Santa Claus. Santa Claus is well known to be based off St. Nicholas who was born in Demre, Turkey.
It was initially believed that St. Nicholas’s remains were stolen from his namesake church in Demre after an earthquake. Italians stole bones from a damaged sarcophagus they believed was his. The remains were taken to Bari in Italy and housed at the Basilica of Saint Nicholas. Every December 6th, the priests collect a liquid that seeps from the tomb. It is believed the liquid has magical powers. But, now it appears that liquid is from someone else and not Nicholas!
Digital surveys show there is an elaborate tomb under Saint Nicholas Church in his hometown. The tomb lays below the mosaic flooring so its presence wasn’t previously known. It is now believed by the archaeologists that the shrine was not damaged by the earthquake and the Italian thieves must have taken another priest’s bones.

While the Catholic Church still believes Saint Nicholas’s remains are the Basilica in Bari, time and further research might prove that wrong. It’s plausible to the think that an elaborate unground shrine in Saint Nicholas’s hometown at his namesake church might be his final resting spot. It will take time, but the mosaics will be carefully removed to ensure their preservation.
