Mom Stands By Decision To Take Her Kids Hunting Despite Criticism

Parents who take their children hunting sometimes get a lot of grief from people who don’t support this activity. One mom who regularly posts pictures of her kids hunting on social media doesn’t allow those gripers to change her mind. Instead, she explains why hunting is such a great activity for her kids.

Heather Del Moral is an avid hunter. The Oklahoma mom is sharing her love of hunting with her kids Juan, 14, Isa, 12, and Armonia, 9. Del Moral says her kids love it and hunting is a great way to get them to unplug from their electronic devices.

“Hunting gets children out there amongst nature and teaches them respect for animals. They’re fascinated by the biology of it all too,” Del Moral said. “They help clean the animals, and I show them the heart and talk them through all the different chambers.”

The 34-year-old mom works for Oklahoma’s Wildlife Department. She feels that hunting is a great way to bond with her children as they are working closely together for a common goal. The kids don’t bring their phones so they have more fluid and uninterrupted conversations.

Del Moral hammers her children with safety tips and reminders. “It’s not a video game. These are real-life guns,” she said. The kids have to not only be careful with the guns but also have to always be aware of their surroundings. These are important lessons in life that you can’t learn in a classroom or with a video game console.

She doesn’t force her children to hunt. If they chose not to, that’s fine with her. “We don’t ever pressure the children to do anything they don’t want to do,” hunting buddy Amanda Thomas said. “If they decide they’d rather not shoot a gun or something, we won’t make them. We don’t want them to be scared.”

Her husband doesn’t hunt, but their kids all enjoy it. Del Moral doesn’t hunt just for sport. They are putting food on the table. “The children love it though. They haven’t shot doves yet, they prefer to run out and catch them, but they’ve caught loads of turkeys, deer, and fish,” she said. “When we do kill something, we don’t just leave it there. We’ll clean it and take it for meat so it isn’t wasted.”

Of course, she gets a lot of naysayers online who try to shame her for taking her children hunting. She defends her decision in the face of this liberal backlash. “I’ve had people tell me they can’t believe I take my children hunting. I respect their opinion, but ask they respect mine too, and don’t knock something they haven’t tried,” Del Moral said.

Animal activists often target hunters. A 12-year-old was recently cyberbullied and threatened for hunting. Click here to read about that!
