Mindy Cohn first entered our homes as Natalie on the hit show Facts of Life. Her bubbly personality made her a favorite among the show’s fans.

Cohn recently revealed that she spent the last five years fighting for her life. In 2012, she became so winded on a walk around her Los Angeles neighborhood that she couldn’t continue. She told People magazine, “I just couldn’t go anymore. This was before Uber was really a thing, so I texted my friend Helen Hunt and said, ‘Something’s wrong with me. I need help.'”

She went to the doctor and a scan revealed a lump on her breast. A biopsy led to a breast cancer diagnosis. Cohn kept this secret for five years but is now sharing her ordeal for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

She underwent a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation, but cancer remained. Cohn is an optimist but this prolonged fight was draining her. “I’ve always been an optimist,” she said. “But the cancer metastasized. It kept spreading and coming back. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, and then it would. And then I’d wait for another shoe to drop, and it would. I was frustrated and enraged. I couldn’t control any of this. I couldn’t fix it.”

Cohn took a break from acting after her diagnosis. In addition to playing Natalie, she also is known for voicing Velma on Scooby Doo. Her cancer is finally in remission, so she is planning on returning to work. She is also planning on climbing Macchu Pichu next year with her best friends. Her health has returned after a very long five-year battle.
