After causing massive destruction in Puerto Rico, Hurricane Maria is heading north, bringing storm and surge watches for parts of North Carolina up to the Virginia border. An evacuation has been ordered for Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands in the Outer Banks.
The National Hurricane Center has issued a storm surge warning for the coast from Cape Lookout northward to Cape Duck. “A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the coast of North Carolina from Surf City northward to the North Carolina/Virginia border, including the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds,” the NHC also said in a statement.
As the video below details, Maria is not likely to make much contact directly with the Carolina coast. It will come close and then is expected to head back to sea. Storm surge is the biggest concern.
Thankfully, Maria has greatly weakened since bearing down on Puerto Rico. But, storm surges aren’t anything to take lightly for those in the impacted areas of North Carolina. Staying behind can be a risk to your life.
