Swiss Superman: Five Fast Facts About Cesaro

WWE Superstar Cesaro is one tough dude; you don’t get the nickname “Swiss Superman” for nothing.

Here are five fast facts you need to know about the three-time WWE tag team champion.

5. He won the green card lottery to start his wrestling career

Cesaro is a native of Lucerne, Switzerland, and his pro wrestling career began in Europe, where he competed mostly in Switzerland, Germany, and England. However, his career didn’t truly take off until he moved to the United States – and it all happened thanks to luck. Cesaro won permanent residency from his first attempt at the green card lottery in 2004, and he’s been living in the U.S. ever since.

Bonus fact: as Switzerland is centrally located in Europe, the Swiss people speak many different languages. In addition to his native Swiss German, Cesaro is also fluent in English, German, Italian, and French.

4. He once competed as an ice cream cone

While Cesaro’s pre-WWE career is defined by his time tagging with Chris Hero as the Kings of Wrestling, for a time in 2007 he had a singles’ stint in Chikara as “A Very Mysterious Ice Cream.” The name is pretty much self explanatory: he wrestled under an ice cream cone mask and was a member of the Los Ice Creams. (He’s the one on the right in the picture above.)

However, the gimmick only lasted about two months before Cesaro shed the mask and went back to teaming with Hero.

3. He’s trained over two dozen wrestlers

Cesaro is notable for his exceptional strength and technical ability, so it’s no surprise that he took on a training role in his career. He served as a guest trainer at the Chikara Wrestle Factory before being promoted to head trainer – taking over the role from Chris Hero – in October 2007. Along with Chikara co-founder Mike Quackenbush, Cesaro trained the ninth class of the Chikara Wrestle Factory before signing with WWE in August 2011.

2. He has an insane arsenal of moves

Again: Cesaro is notable for his exceptional strength and technical ability. This cannot be overstated. Some of his moves, like the Cesaro Swing, he’s continued to perform in WWE. In the video above, he whirls his opponent around for an astounding 100 rotations.

However, Cesaro has yet to break out some of his most impressive moves in WWE. Skip ahead to the :28 mark in the video below to see his insane UFO maneuver.

1. This is his second stint in WWE

Cesaro’s current stint in WWE goes all the way back to Florida Championship Wrestling in 2011, but he actually signed a contract even earlier than that. In 2006, Cesaro impressed WWE officials with an appearance in a backstage segment on Raw as a police officer, and then again with a successful tryout match in Deep South Wrestling. He signed a developmental contract that November, but it didn’t last long – he returned to Chikara the following February.

Cesaro’s run with Sheamus as the Raw Tag Team Champions was his best to date in WWE, but I think he has way more to offer. Now that The Bar are no longer champions, hopefully, WWE doesn’t forget about the Swiss Superman.
