feet on dashboard

A Georgia mother is sharing the story of what happened to her after resting her feet on the car dashboard. This is something simple that many of us do, especially on long car rides, but it can have lifelong consequences.

Audra Tatum liked to relax in the car while riding shotgun. She would lean back and put her feet on the dashboard. Her husband warned her about this for years, but she never gave it any thought until she was in a car accident that changed everything.

It wasn’t a major accident. Everyone else in the car walked away with minor scrapes and bruises. But, Audra faced a much different situation because she had her feet on the dashboard.

“The airbag went off, throwing my foot up and breaking my nose,” Tatum explained. “I was looking at the bottom of my foot facing up at me.” In addition to the broken nose, she also broke her ankle, femur, and arm.

“Basically my whole right side was broken, and it’s simply because of my ignorance,” Tatum said.

She is still feeling the effects of this accident two years later. “I can’t do my career as an EMS. I can’t lift patients anymore,” she explained. “I can’t stand more than 4 hours at a time. Once I’m at that 4-hour mark I’m in tears.”

Pictures of Audra’s crash and recovery can be seen below.

Had her feet been down, her life would have continued as normal. Now, she might be facing pain the rest of her life.

Audra isn’t the only one warning others about putting your feet on the dashboard. The Chattanooga Fire Department also has been pressing this issue. Paramedics see the real life consequences of this seemingly simple act on a regular basis.

I will be honest and say that I do this when I’m riding shotgun. Thanks to Audra’s warnings, I will never do it again!
