sidewalk bumps

Have you ever wondered what those yellow pads on the sidewalk with bumps are for? I always thought they were there to provide traction as you are stepping on or off a curb, but that’s actually not the intended purpose.

They are actually there to help visually impaired people. There are different shapes and textures on these pads to inform people what is approaching.  They are a way of communicating changes to the pavement or area ahead. They are safety precautions that many of us simply don’t realize.

The video below has more information regarding the different patterns and colors mean. It is a video from the United Kingdom, but you will recognize many of these things.

I never realized that these patterns were a method of communicating. Most of us probably didn’t recognize this because they weren’t designed for us.
