The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just announced that consumers should avoid eating Caribena brand Maradol Papayas because of their connection to an outbreak of salmonellosis.
These papayas can be identified by their green exterior, which turns yellow as it ripens. The FDA says that consumers should avoid eating these papayas, regardless of their color.
The Maryland Department of Health in Baltimore found that a retail location in the area had samples of the papaya that tested positive for strains of Salmonella.
As of right now, the CDC has reported 47 cases, 12 hospitalizations and one death in 12 states from the Salmonella Kiambu outbreak. In addition, the CDC advises Americans to not eat Maradol papayas from Mexico as they have been linked to these illnesses.
Each year, the CDC says that 19,000 people are hospitalized with salmonella, resulting in around 380 annual deaths.
Earlier this month, the USDA announced a massive recall of beef hot dogs, estimated to include 7,000,000 pounds of beef.
Please share this story with all your friends and family, as this brand of papayas should not be consumed under any circumstances!
