Chris Jericho is my favorite WWE Superstar of all time. From the moment he debuted in WWE in 1999 I was in love, and nearly 18 years later I haven’t stopped loving him — even through all his reinventions.
Jericho has successfully reinvented himself more times than anyone on the WWE roster, and throughout his career he’s proven that he can truly do it all. So without further ado, here are my top 4 favorite reinventions of Chris Jericho.
In the summer of 2008, Jericho adopted the gimmick of a suit-wearing self-righteous tightwad inspired by Javier Bardem’s character in No Country For Old Men. Simply put, this version of Jericho was the complete opposite of his Y2J gimmick, but it also gave us one of his most memorable catchphrases: “I’m the best in the world at what I do.”
For lack of a better name, I’ve dubbed Jericho’s run after he returned to WWE for a second time as “LED Jacket Jericho,” because that LED jacket is nothing short of iconic. But it was also during this run that Jericho participated in one of my absolute favorite feuds.
CM Punk is probably my second-favorite WWE Superstar of all time, even though he ripped my heart out of my chest and GTS’d it when he unceremoniously left WWE. So when Jericho went after Punk in early 2012, I was torn as to who to cheer for. The weeks leading up to their WWE Championship match at WrestleMania XXVIII gave us some of the best promo work from either wrestler.
YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE NEXT VERSION OF JERICHO!?!?
Jericho’s most recent run was, in my opinion, his best since his WWE debut. I mean, he managed to get people to cheer for a list – who else could possibly do that?
But besides the List of Jericho and his myriad colorful, silky scarves, Jericho’s friendship with Kevin Owens was one of the best storylines in recent memory. The “Festival of Friendship” was must-watch television; and Owens broke all of our hearts when he turned on his best friend.
My absolute favorite version of Chris Jericho is and always will be the version that debuted in WWE: Y2J.
I loved everything about this Jericho: his crazy hair, his flashy outfits, his ego, his quick wit and even quicker insults – and especially those he flung at Stephanie McMahon. Jericho and Stephanie had one of WWE’s greatest rivalries, and 11-year-old me LOVED to hate the Billion Dollar Princess. Only Jericho could take a cheap promotional spot for Planet of the Apes and turn it into one of the greatest in-ring segments of all time.
These are just my favorite versions of Jericho, but there’s much, much more he’s done in his career.
