Jeanne C. Riley was not a well-known singer when she recorded “Harper Valley PTA” in 1968. The country song was an immediate hit and catapulted her to the international stage.

Many of us could relate or sympathize with the widowed subject of the song, Mrs. Johnson, who was targeted by the PTA gossipers who had no right to judge anyone.

Riley performed the song at the Grand Ole Opry. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the new singer. And as you can see in the video below, she nailed it!

This song was such a success that it became a movie and then a TV series staring Barbara Eden.

It’s catchy tune and relatable subject make it memorable decades later.
