You learn who your true friends are in tough times. They will stand with you while others run for the shadows.
Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Queen Elizabeth proved that she is a great friend to Americans.
The monarch broke protocol in order to show solidarity with us. During the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, she ordered the Royal Guard to play the Star Spangled Banner.
This was a rather touching nod of solidarity to us as our nation was under attack. The Royals are steeped in protocol and tradition. It’s rather significant when it is broken. The Revolutionary War is obviously long behind us.
Unlike Colin Kaepernick, who takes a knee during the National Anthem, Queen Elizabeth broke the rules to honor it when we needed it most.
9/11 was an emotional time. We grieved as a nation. We were in solidarity. The National Anthem brought many of us to tears as we were unified and proud to be Americans. The video below of the Star Spangled Banner set to 9/11 pictures still stirs up those memories all these years later.
It’s important to remember who our friends are. Queen Elizabeth is definitely one of ours.
