Marilyn Monroe stole a lot of hearts. The super star was unlike any other. She clearly had her personal struggles but she did find joy in helping others.

In 1954, she wed baseball great Joe DiMaggio. The newlyweds went to Japan for their honeymoon. While DiMaggio was attending a baseball clinic there, Marilyn visited throngs of adoring US service members stationed in Korea.

Marilyn relished the USO trip for years afterwards, saying it “was the best thing that ever happened to me. I never felt like a star before in my heart. It was so wonderful to look down and see a fellow smiling at me.”

While her marriage to DiMaggio lasted only 8 months, the visit during her honeymoon was always viewed as a highlight to Monroe. And as you can see in the following pictures, it was a thrill for the service members who were missing home.
